All about them Apples

Apples are one of the best healthy food sources out there. The average medium apple contains only 95 calories with 0.3g fat, 0.5g protein, 25g carbs, and 4.4g of fiber. To top this, apples are Cholesterol free and contribute 14% of our daily recommended Vitamin C intake.

This is all great to know, but why are apples so great? Apples make for a noteworthy snack in the world of fitness and health. Apples are very low in protein and contain 25g low-GI carbs. This makes for a suitable pre-workout snack before hitting the gym. Being low in protein makes them easily digested which in turn helps fight that feeling of being full while training, while the fiber helps slow the digestion process of the protein just enough to combat that notion of being hungry while exercising.

They are also a very heart-healthy snack as apples are low in sodium and high in potassium. This prevents eating an apple from causing large elevations in blood pressure. Apples are incredibly rich in anti-inflammatory compounds that may assist in lessening the effects of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.

Now very important for us all during the current winter, while we are all working on those summer bodies to show off on the beaches in December, apples help support weight loss. Keep in mind that everything is in moderation. The nutritious snacks that apples are, can help you manage your appetite in a big way by reducing your cravings for unhealthy snacks. You can decrease your calorie intake by 15% by eating a medium apple 15 minutes before consuming a meal.

Worldwide there are about 7500 different varieties of apples, so you are spoilt with choice when it comes to our seemingly mundane, but surprisingly delicious and fascinating little round friends.

Which apple is the healthiest for you? It all depends on what you choose as some apples are healthier than others in different departments.

The Pink Lady apple is staggeringly flavonoid-rich which makes it great for heart health. The flavonoids help relax blood vessels which in turn helps decrease blood pressure and thereby heart disease.

Now let us get back to sculpting those summer bodies. The Granny Smith apple has been scientifically proven to aid weight loss. They contain non-digestible compounds that can balance out the bacteria in your colon, improving digestion, and help decrease inflammation and diabetes. All these assist in an increased metabolic rate. Thereby in my opinion those to apples are your best friend.
